OASL to establish 300 customary land secretariats nationwide in 2026

The Office of the Administrator of Stool Lands (OASL) has announced plans to establish 300 Customary Land Secretariats across Ghana in 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen customary land administration under the Land Act 2020 (Act 1036).

The initiative is expected to create over 6000 direct jobs in roles ranging from secretaries, drivers, and ICT professionals to land surveyors, mediators, accountants, and lawyers.

Currently, 110 Customary Land Secretariats are operational.

OASL noted that these secretariats have played a key role in settling land disputes, reducing conflicts, enhancing transparency, and providing land information to support investment decisions.

Speaking on the initiative, the Administrator of Stool Lands, Gad Asorwoe Akwensivie, said: “It is now mandatory for Stools, Skins, Families, and Clans that own land to establish a Customary Land Secretariat. OASL will provide training and start-up equipment on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to availability.”

He added that the new secretariats are aimed at improving governance and transparency in customary land administration.

“The establishment of these secretariats will help settle disputes, enhance accountability, and provide reliable land information for investment purposes. We are committed to supporting traditional authorities and communities throughout this process.”

OASL has begun consultations with traditional institutions, including the National House of Chiefs, Regional Houses of Chiefs, Traditional Councils, Stools, Skins, Clans, Families, and land-focused NGOs, to ensure smooth implementation of the initiative.

Mr. Akwensivie urged all customary land authorities to contact OASL regional and district offices to begin the process of establishing their secretariats, emphasising that the initiative is a nationwide requirement.

The move is expected to boost employment, strengthen land governance, and enhance investment readiness across Ghana’s customary land sector.
