Tamale, January 3, 2026 — The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Special Operations Team has arrested several suspected drug peddlers and users during a routine patrol and intelligence-led operation across identified hotspots in the Tamale Metropolis as part of New Year security measures.

The operation, which aimed at curbing drug-related activities and sustaining peace and public order, was conducted by 105 personnel under the command of DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil.

Officers were earlier briefed on the need for professionalism, discipline, and strict adherence to human rights throughout the exercise.

The team deployed ten service vehicles, including a Black Maria and an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC), to enhance mobility, rapid response, and operational efficiency.

The exercise began with a targeted swoop at Aboabo Forest, following actionable intelligence on suspected drug activities in the area.

Two suspects, Yakubu Ramadan and Mutaru Alhassan, were arrested and found in possession of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

The operation later moved to the Salamba area, where Ambrose Ekomefia was arrested with thirty-six sachets of Trafodol 120mg and dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

Police further identified six other individuals, Maxwell Banga, Issah Abdul Razak, Mohammed Kamara, Iddris Alhassan, Yusif Hajaj, and Abubakari Brimoh, who were found in his company and allegedly engaging in the use of suspected Indian hemp and opioids.

Abubakari Brimoh was also identified as the landlord who allegedly harboured the suspects for drug peddling and usage.

Based on further intelligence, the team proceeded to Sakasaka, where Salifu Suale was arrested with thirty-eight sachets of Trafodol.

Another suspect, Alid Shakun, who allegedly sold the drug on behalf of Salifu Suale, was also arrested at the scene.

Following the arrests, the IGP Special Operations Team conducted patrols within the Central Business District, including the Tamale Central Market and Taxi Rank, to ensure the safety of traders, commuters, and the general public. No additional arrests were made during this phase.

Police indicated that the overall security situation in the Tamale Metropolis remained calm and stable throughout the day and night operations.

Residents were observed carrying out their lawful activities without fear, and no casualties were recorded.

All suspects, together with the seized exhibits, have been conveyed to the Sakasaka Police Station, where they are being held pending further investigations. The exhibits have been retained for evidential purposes.

The Police say the successful operation has significantly contributed to maintaining law and order in the metropolis during the New Year festivities, while enhancing public confidence and deterring drug-related criminal activities.
