Tamale, Dec. 29, 2025 – The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Special Operations Team has intensified efforts to curb drug abuse and related crimes across parts of the Northern Region, combining community engagement with intelligence-led operations that led to multiple arrests in Mion, Yendi and Tamale.

The operation, conducted on December 28, 2025, covered the Tamale Metropolis, Mion District and Yendi Municipality. It followed an invitation from the Mion Kurisabili Yili Association for the police to engage stakeholders on the growing impact of drug abuse and crime within the area.

The stakeholder engagement, held in Mion, formed part of the Ghana Police Service’s preventive policing and community outreach strategy aimed at educating the public and strengthening collaboration in crime prevention.

The operation saw the deployment of 105 police personnel on 10 service vehicles, including a Black Maria and an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC), under the leadership of DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil.

As part of the engagement, the police team participated in the Homecoming Ceremony of the Mion Kurisabili Yili Association, where DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil delivered a keynote address on the theme, “Educate to Empower: Building a Drug-Abuse-Free Society – A Collective Responsibility.”

The team was warmly received by the Chief of the Mion Traditional Area, His Royal Majesty Alhaji Alhassan Mahama, who also chaired the event, alongside elders of the traditional area and executives of the association.

In his address, DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil highlighted the dangers and long-term consequences of drug abuse, its link to criminal activities, and the shared responsibility of families, traditional authorities, religious leaders and law enforcement agencies in preventing crime.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including the Member of Parliament for Mion Constituency, Hon. Alhaji Adam Mohammed Misbaw; the Vice Principal of Bagabaga Training College, Dr. Fuseini Mumuni; the former NPP Northern Regional Secretary, Alhaji Alhassan Sibdow Yakubu; a lecturer at the University for Development Studies, Dr. Mohammed Abukari Sadiq Timtooni; and the District Chief Executive for Mion, Hon. Hamza Azindoo.

Following the engagement, the team transitioned into active operations based on intelligence gathered. At Mion, one Abdulai Iddrisu was arrested for possession of quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp and 14 sachets of Tramadol capsules.

At Yendi, police arrested Abdulai Mutala for possession of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp. Four others — Abdul Razak Muftaw, Hafishetu Abdul Razak, Iddrisu Nurudeen and Alhassan Mohammed — were also arrested for possession of 18 sachets of Tapentadol 250mg (red).

While returning to Tamale, the team responded to a distress call from the Gulkpe Task Force, which had intercepted Yahaya Fuseini and Majid Seidu, popularly known as “Guo-Naa,” in possession of 10 compressed parcels each of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

The suspects and exhibits were subsequently handed over to the Special Operations Team.

All suspects have been conveyed to the Sakasaka Police Station, where they are being held pending further investigations and possible prosecution. The exhibits have been retained for forensic analysis and evidential purposes.

Police say the duty tour was concluded successfully without any incidents, noting that the operation underscored the effectiveness of combining community engagement with intelligence-led policing.

Authorities have reiterated the importance of sustained collaboration between traditional leaders, community stakeholders, and the Ghana Police Service in maintaining peace and security across the region.
