The Mayor of Tamale, Alhaji Adam Abubakari Takoro, has reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to building a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable city through effective solid waste management.
Mr. Abubakari Takoro gave the assurance while addressing participants at a one-day workshop on solid waste management held at the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly auditorium on Wednesday.
The event formed part of activities under the Sustainable Cities Phase 1 Project, a European Union (EU)-funded initiative implemented by Expertise France in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development and the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.

Alhaji Takoro described the project as a “game-changer” in urban sanitation, noting that it represents a significant leap forward in the city’s collective mission to improve environmental health and resilience.
“It was inspiring to see so many key partners in one room, including representatives from the Ministry of Local Government, Expertise France, the European Union, Assembly Members, civil society, and the private sector,” he said. “This transformative initiative is helping us rethink how we manage waste in our communities.”

The Mayor expressed profound gratitude to the European Union for its generous partnership, to Expertise France for its technical leadership, and to the Ministry of Local Government and allied ministries for their coordination.
He also acknowledged the tireless efforts of local actors, including the Assembly’s Waste Management Department, Environmental Health and Sanitation Unit, waste management service providers, community leaders, and residents.

“Keeping Tamale clean and sustainable is a collective responsibility,” the Mayor emphasized.
“Your dedication forms the foundation of our success. Together, we are building a Tamale we can all be proud of.”
The Sustainable Cities Project aims to enhance urban governance, promote environmental sustainability, and strengthen local capacity in waste management across selected Ghanaian cities, with Tamale playing a leading role in the initiative.
