The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Emelia Arthur, met with the European Union Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Rune Skinnebach, to review Ghana’s progress towards lifting the Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing yellow card imposed by the European Union.

The meeting highlighted Ghana’s commitment to strengthening governance within the fisheries sector, following the recent passage of the reviewed Fisheries Act. The new legislation represents a major step toward promoting sustainability and responsible fishing practices in the country.

Discussions also focused on the effective implementation of the revised law to ensure meaningful impact. The Minister emphasized the need for continuous engagement with artisanal fishers to encourage compliance with the updated regulations, which aim to protect their interests by ensuring fishing licenses are registered in their names.

Additionally, Emelia Arthur proposed the adoption of surveillance footage along the Gulf of Guinea to boost monitoring and enforcement, further reinforcing Ghana’s dedication to eliminating IUU fishing activities and securing the eventual lifting of the yellow card.
