President Mahama to Launch “The Accra Reset “at UNGA 2025

9

President John Dramani Mahama, African Union Champion for African Financial Institutions, will host a landmark high-level event on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York to formally launch “The Accra Reset”: Reimagining Global Governance for Health and Development.

The initiative seeks to introduce a bold, actionable framework to fundamentally transform the global governance architecture, making it fit-for-purpose in a turbulent post-SDG era.

A Global Gathering

The launch will bring together an influential assembly of Heads of State, leaders of multilateral institutions, philanthropic organisations, business innovators, and civil society representatives from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, and other global regions.

Key Announcements

At the event, President Mahama will announce the establishment of a Global Presidential Council, a pioneering body of Heads of State and Government from across the Global South and beyond.

  • The Council will provide political leadership to drive The Accra Reset’s agenda.
  • It will constitute a High-Level Advisory Panel of renowned leaders in health, finance, innovation, and business to ensure both political will and intellectual rigour in forging new models of global cooperation.

Why Now?

While the MDGs and SDGs have lifted millions out of poverty and fostered unprecedented global collaboration, progress has stalled. The UN’s 2023 review revealed that fewer than half of the 169 SDG targets are on track, especially in areas of health, inequality, and fiscal resilience.

With 2030 fast approaching, The Accra Reset declares that the era of “development-as-usual” is over. What the world needs now is a fundamental Reset of the very logic of global cooperation.

Building on African Leadership

The initiative builds on the momentum of the Africa Health Sovereignty Summit held in Accra in August 2025. It proposes a new operating model that prioritises resilient coalitions, syndicates, and agile platforms capable of delivering tangible results amidst multiple global crises.

The health sector; highly vulnerable to global shocks and constrained by an unsustainable aid paradigm, will serve as the starting point for this new approach, inspiring broader systemic reforms across all areas of development.
