The Executive Director of the Consumer Protection Agency (CPA), Kofi Kapito, has voiced disappointment over the absence of consumer representation on the newly established committee tasked with reviewing DSTV subscription prices.
The committee, formed by the Minister for Communications, Digital Technologies, and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, is expected to begin work today, Monday, September 8, 2025.
Chaired by the Minister, the body is mandated to examine arguments for and against a possible reduction in subscription fees, a matter that has sparked heated public debate in recent weeks.
DSTV Ghana has consistently defended its pricing structure, pointing to operational challenges and external cost factors as justification for maintaining current rates.
Reacting to the committee’s composition, Mr. Kapito criticised the lack of consumer voices, stressing that subscribers should not be left out of such a crucial process.
“I do not see any consumer representation. We are the ones who are paying the DSTV bills every month. If there is anything, I think some consumer representation should have been on the committee to listen to what DSTV has to say and also to engage the Minister,” he stated.
The CPA boss insisted that consumer participation would bring balance to the deliberations and ensure that corporate and government perspectives do not overshadow the interests of ordinary subscribers.
The committee’s findings are expected to play a key role in shaping the future of DSTV subscription pricing in Ghana and in determining whether government intervention will be necessary to safeguard consumer interests.
