Tamale, August 26, 2025 – The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has officially received the final report on the April 13 incident at the Tamale Teaching Hospital that led to the death of a patient and sparked widespread public concern over alleged medical negligence.
The report was presented by the independent committee chaired by Mr. Abdul Rahim Mohamed, which was tasked to examine clinical, operational, and systemic factors that may have contributed to the unfortunate event.
Mr. Rahim disclosed that the committee engaged extensively with the patient’s family, frontline staff from critical departments such as the emergency ward and the intensive care unit (ICU), and reviewed existing standard operating procedures at the hospital.

The findings, he said, come with wide-ranging recommendations aimed at strengthening operational efficiency and restoring public trust in the institution’s healthcare delivery.
Tamale Teaching Hospital is a vital referral facility, not just for the Northern Region, but also for surrounding regions and even patients from parts of Burkina Faso. It is therefore essential that its systems are strengthened to meet its crucial mandate, Mr. Rahim emphasized.

Receiving the report, Hon. Akandoh commended the committee for what he described as a thorough and professional work.
He assured the public that the Ministry of Health will carefully study the findings and take concrete steps to implement the recommendations.

“This report is not just for the Ministry, but for the people of Ghana. Our ultimate aim is to improve the quality of healthcare delivery nationwide.
Ghanaians deserve assurance that the system is being strengthened for their safety and wellbeing,” the Minister stated.
He further reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to transparency and accountability in addressing public health concerns and pledged to continue collaborating with stakeholders to enhance patient safety across the country’s health facilities.

The release of the final report marks a significant step in efforts to address systemic weaknesses at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, which remains one of Ghana’s key medical referral centers.
