Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has disclosed that the government will sign 31 major road and bridge construction contracts by the end of August 2025, with strict timelines and penalties in place to prevent undue delays.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Thursday, July 31, the Minister revealed that the commencement certificate for all the projects has been secured, and the procurement process is underway to select contractors for immediate mobilisation.
“The commencement certificate has been obtained, and we are now in the procurement process to get these contractors to the site. The contract is two years, that is, 24 months from start to finish and handing over,” he explained.
In a shift from past practices, Agbodza underscored that the new contracts will include strict provisions to penalise unjustified delays, including immediate termination if work stalls for more than two months without valid reasons. He added that contractors will be required to operate around the clock to meet deadlines.
“Unlike the past, we are writing into the contract that if you delay for three months without any justification, we will terminate the work immediately without further notice. In the contract, they are going to work 24/7, so you are not compelled to take these projects if you have issues with it…all the contract will be signed by August at the latest, except the Dambai bridge,” he stated.
