The May-June 2025 Electrical Wiring Certification Examination is underway in four centres across the country.
1,206 electricians are taking part in the examination, which is being conducted by the Energy Commission in collaboration with the Commission for Technical Education and Training, CTVET.
Speaking to GBC’s Energy News at the Accra Technical Training Centre, Assistant Manager at the Electricity and Natural Gas Directorate of the Energy Commission, Mr Stephen Yomoh, underscored the need for all electricians to register to be legally certified to engage in wiring and installation works in the country.
The Examination which assesses the theoretical and practical competences of electricians, is taking place in Accra, Takoradi, Kumasi and Tamale.

The Energy Commission, which is championing the examination, is enjoined by law to certify all practising electricians in the country.
Mr. Yomoh said that since 2013, the Commission has certified about 17,000 electricians nationwide.
He urged electricians who have not been certified and are practising to enrol for the Wiring Certification Examination.
“We want to tell them that this exercise is a practically oriented examination, and they shouldn’t be scared. Once they are electricians and practising in the field, they can make it, so they should not be afraid and come and write the exam.” Mr. Yomoh stated.
An Examiner Elder, Appiagyei Kwame Tort, explained that the examination is to help improve the skills of the electricians to help reduce the risk associated with wiring and installation.
He said the training and examination help in ensuring adherence to set standards.
The certification examination, Elder Torto said, is in three forms: the written section, the interview part and the practical examination where the practitioners are assessed thoroughly before certification.
A candidate, Emmanuel Yeboah, said the examination was okay, and he was preparing for the practical aspect to enable him to obtain the necessary marks to receive the certification.
Mr. Yeboah stated that the certification examination is good “because it is like being a driver and being licensed to drive. Without the licence, you cannot drive, so it is good that we, the electricians, are also certified to practice.”
According to the Energy Commission, the Electrical Wiring Certification Examination has helped in drastically reducing electrical wiring-related fires across the country.
