Surf Ghana empowers skaters in Volta Region

11

Wheels Ghana, the first and only organised skate club in Ho, recently received a significant boost when Surf Ghana, in partnership with Element Skateboards, brought its nationwide “Race to Skate” initiative to the Volta Region.

The visit aimed to collaborate with local skaters to develop and strengthen the sport in the area.

The Surf Ghana team, during their three-day visit, warmly engaged with the community, beginning their trip at the Regional Museum, where they learned about the region’s history.

As part of their efforts, they donated skateboards to Wheels Ghana, provided training for the skaters, and conducted a site survey at the Youth Park, a proposed location for a new skatepark in the Volta Regional Capital.

The Youth Park project is being developed under the Young and Safe Project by Node Eight, in collaboration with consortium partners, the Ho Municipal Assembly, Love Aid Foundation, and the Ghana Education Service.
During the site assessment, the Surf Ghana team made valuable recommendations for the design of the skatepark.

They donated 10 modern Element Skateboards to Wheels Ghana, describing this gift as part of a broader effort to equip communities with resources to promote skateboarding talent.

Following the donation, Surf Ghana members joined riders from Wheels Ghana at their popular local skate spot, the forecourt of the Ho Municipal Assembly.

New riders received hands-on coaching, while more experienced skaters were challenged to learn new techniques and stunts.

The session peaked with an electrifying display from the Surf Ghana team, whose impressive flips and grinds drew enthusiastic cheers from spectators.

The Project Lead for Surf Ghana, Miss Harmonie Bataka, remarked, “Skateboarding is more than just a sport; it’s a tool for unity and creativity. Seeing the passion in Ho’s youth reaffirms our mission to expand access to skate culture across Ghana.”

The Leader and President of Wheels Ghana, Xorse Senanu, expressed his excitement about the visit, saying, “This experience has inspired our riders and equipped us with equipment we couldn’t afford otherwise,”.

“It’s a game changer for our community.”

The visit concluded with an evening knowledge-sharing session, where both teams brainstormed strategies to sustain growth in the local skate community.

Topics discussed included securing sponsorships, organising events, and fostering inclusivity to attract more youth to the sport.

With renewed momentum from Surf Ghana’s visit, skaters in Ho are poised to carve out a brighter future—one ollie at a time.

Our regional correspondent, Tilda Acorlor, will continue to monitor the impact of the Race to Skate initiative on beginners in Ho as it expands into other areas of the region.
