Mahama orders investigation into alleged drug trafficking at KIA

Accra, Ghana – April 1, 2025 – President John Dramani Mahama has directed a full-scale investigation into allegations of suspected drug trafficking and money laundering at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

This follows claims made by Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, a Member of Parliament, at a press conference, regarding two suspicious flights that recently arrived in the country.

In a statement shared on his social media page, President Mahama assured the public that his government takes such allegations seriously.

He has, therefore, instructed key investigative agencies—including the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, the National Investigations Bureau (NIB), and the National Security Coordinator—to collaborate fully with the MP in probing the matter.

“We will maintain zero tolerance for using Ghana as a transit or final destination for drugs or drug trafficking,” the President emphasized.

He further noted that the NIB recently made a significant drug bust worth $350 million, reinforcing the government’s commitment to tackling illicit drug trade in the country.

Addressing journalists, the Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, called on government to be transparent in its fight against drug trafficking and money laundering.

“We demand accountability from the National Security for the gold bars and cash retrieved and what they intend to do with it. The Minority Caucus, as responsible opposition as we are in absolute circumspection, has been patient and originally given two clear months for National Security to communicate the status of their investigation with the public,”He demanded.

The minority also attributed the pirate attack on a Ghanaian-registered fishing vessel on March 27, 2025, to the NDC MPs’ opposition to the planned procurement of two offshore patrol vessels by the Akufo-Addo government.

“You will recall the diligent attempt of the erstwhile government to procure two offshore vessels for the Ghana Navy in 2024. This plan in its final stages was fiercely opposed by the NDC in parliament, who called for the process to be terminated.

“Indeed, subsequently, the process of purchase was thus aborted. As pirates are aware of Ghana Navy’s lack of offshore patrol vessels, the vulnerabilities of the security of our waters are likely to be exploited by these pirates,” he said.

The President’s swift response underscores the administration’s stance against organized crime, with assurances of transparency and accountability in the investigative process.
