Bossman Asare rejects calls for removal of EC officials

Dr Bossman Asare, the Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) in charge of Corporate Affairs, has dismissed calls for the removal of EC officials, asserting that those making such demands lack a full understanding of the Commission’s work since 2020.

In a recent statement, Dr. Asare praised the EC for its efficiency, transparency, and cost-effectiveness in overseeing elections, highlighting the institution’s commitment to conducting free and fair elections.

“There are laws in this country, and since the Commission took over in 2018, there have been numerous observers, both domestic and international. The results are publicly available, and in terms of quality, Ghana is among the best in Africa when it comes to elections,” he noted.

He further emphasized that anyone calling for the removal of EC officials is not fully aware of the work that has been done. “The EC has been transparent, cost-efficient, and has done a lot for the country,” he added in an interview with Joy News.

Dr Asare also pointed out that the 2020 election was internationally acclaimed, and despite some challenges in the 2024 election, the overall process was still successful.

“If anyone is calling for the removal of someone at the EC, it means they don’t fully understand the work that has been done. The EC has been transparent, cost-efficient, and has done a lot for the country.”

He strongly defended the EC’s decisions regarding the re-collation and supervision of election results, emphasizing that opposition to the Commission’s actions undermines the Constitution.

His remarks came amidst controversy surrounding the re-collation of parliamentary election results in constituencies such as Ahafo Ano North, Techiman South, Ahafo Ano South West, Nsawam Adoagyiri, Obuasi East, Okaikwei Central, and Tema Central.

These results were re-collated and declared in favour of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), while results for Ablekuma North and Dome Kwabenya were suspended by the EC.

Dr Asare also reiterated that anyone who disagrees with the EC’s actions is free to seek redress through the courts, following the constitutional procedure.
