Political Scientist, Dr. Kwesi Amakye has stated that political parties should learn to respect their rules to avoid Members of Parliament switching to contest as independent.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has announced the indefinite adjournment of parliamentary proceedings, a decision made on Tuesday, October 22.

This announcement follows exchanges between lawmakers from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding which caucus holds the Majority.

Speaker Bagbin when announcing the adjournment disclosed that he had received a communication from the Supreme Court directing him to stay his earlier ruling, which had declared four parliamentary seats vacant.

Speaking on GHOne TV with Lantam Papanko, Dr. Amakye stated that moving forward political parties should learn to play by their rules and respect their own constitution as well as the rights of the members of their party.

“I hope that the political parties are going to have to learn to play by their rules. If they have difficulty with the provision in their own Constitution, they better address them. But at the end of the day, they should respect their own Constitution. And also, the rights of the members of their party in the context of the Constitution.

“In the case of the NPP, for example, we have had very special development for some time now. We had the issue involving Paul Afoko, Kwabena Agyapong, Allan Kyeremanten, and several other members of Parliament, many of whom did not necessarily choose to even rebel by going independent. Some of them might have decided just to keep quiet, although they were not satisfied with the way the procedures leading to their primaries.” he stated
