Tamale, October 18, 2024 – In a candid opinion piece released today, Dr. Sa-ad Iddrisu urged Ghanaians to lower their expectations of Hon. Ato Forson, the newly appointed Majority Leader of Parliament.
Dr. Iddrisu likened Forson’s leadership to “receiving a new Bugatti without an engine,” signaling the challenges ahead for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) despite its recent parliamentary majority.
He argued that while the NDC secured a majority in parliament following Speaker Alban Bagbin’s ruling, it lacks the numbers necessary to make decisive voting decisions under article 104 of the 1992 Constitution.
The reason for this is the ongoing boycott by New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs, which hampers the NDC’s ability to legislate effectively.
Dr. Iddrisu’s caution comes with less than 50 days to the December 7 elections, raising concerns over the NDC’s capacity to address pressing national issues such as the controversial e-levy, betting taxes, and the fight against illegal mining (galamsey).
He warned that even if the Supreme Court upholds Bagbin’s ruling on the NDC majority, the absence of NPP MPs in the chamber will leave the NDC unable to push through key decisions.
Dr. Iddrisu, who holds a PhD in Political Science, reminded citizens that Hon. Haruna Iddrisu has often been the target of political criticism and that Hon. Ato Forson could face similar challenges if expectations remain high amid these parliamentary hurdles.
As the country approaches a critical election, Dr. Iddrisu’s message calls for measured optimism and a realistic view of what the NDC majority can achieve under the current parliamentary dynamics.
