Deputy Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Richard Gyan-Mensah has disclosed that government is reconsidering Russia as one of the potential vendors to provide nuclear power to Ghana.

He said Russia has submitted a proposal that includes a hybrid nuclear technology model, which the Ministry will evaluate to determine its suitability for Ghana’s nuclear development agenda.

Mr. Gyan-Mensah made the announcement at the launch of the 9th Ghana Energy Awards in Accra.

He said, “Currently, we have two vendors for nuclear energy that we have settled on, one from China and the other from the US. The Russians have also expressed strong interest and theirs is a hybrid one — that is, solar with nuclear. It is in the form of an FPSO which will dock on the sea. I have been invited, alongside a technical team, this month to see what they have done, and if it fits into our plan, we will bring it and add it to the two we already have.”

The Chairman of the Energy Awards Panel, Kwame Jantuah, said, “Let us use this platform to shine a light on the architects of our dear country Ghana’s energy future, using the sector as a catalyst for transition and transformation for the good people of Ghana. Together, let us inspire a generation of energy leaders and reaffirm our shared commitment to sustainable national development.”

The 9th edition of the Ghana Energy Awards has been launched with a focus on repositioning the Energy Sector as a pillar of national development.

The event marked the formal unveiling of the 2025 award categories, signaling the commencement of nominations to honour both individuals and organisations across the energy sector.

A total of 26 competitive categories have been announced, including Energy Personality of the Year, CEO of the Year, Outstanding Local Content Initiative, Energy Company of the Year, and Downstream Company of the Year, among others.

The Awards will feature six non-competitive categories and are scheduled to take place in November 2025.
