President Mahama directs urgent measures to bridge $156M USAID funding gap

Accra, February 11, 2025 – President John Dramani Mahama has instructed the Minister for Finance, Hon. Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, to take immediate action to address a $156 million funding gap following the suspension of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) international funding program.

In a statement issued by the Presidency, the President expressed deep concern over the financial shortfall, particularly its projected $78.2 million impact on critical health interventions.

These include malaria prevention, maternal and child health, family planning, reproductive health, nutrition, and the fight against HIV/AIDS.

The availability of essential antiretroviral drugs, testing, and prevention programs is also under threat due to the funding disruption.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, emphasized that President Mahama has directed that bridging arrangements focus on these priority areas to mitigate the negative effects of the funding suspension.

The directive comes amid growing concerns about the sustainability of key healthcare programs that rely on USAID support.

The government is expected to outline alternative funding measures in the coming days to ensure continuity in healthcare services for vulnerable populations.
