Democracy Hub calls for justice despite Attorney General’s nolle prosequi in Galamsey protest case

Accra, February 9, 2025 – The Democracy Hub has expressed mixed reactions to the Attorney General’s decision to discontinue the case against its members and other individuals arrested during protests against illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.

While welcoming the Attorney General’s nolle prosequi as affirmation of their constitutional right to protest, the group insists the decision does not absolve the government of responsibility for the alleged human rights violations suffered by demonstrators.

In a statement released yesterday, Democracy Hub condemned the violent crackdown on peaceful protests, citing illegal arrests, inhumane detention conditions, and reports of torture and ill-treatment.

The group called for an independent inquiry into these alleged abuses and demanded accountability from state actors, including the Ghana Police Service and National Security apparatus.

“We refuse to accept this decision as the end of the matter. Those responsible for these human rights violations must be held accountable,” the statement read.

Democracy Hub extended gratitude to its legal team, The Lawyers for Protest Defence, as well as solidarity groups such as Afrikii, the Economic Fighters League, and #FreeTheCitizens.

They commended their supporters for unwavering advocacy and resilience in defending democracy and environmental rights.

Reiterating their commitment to the fight against illegal mining and the protection of Ghana’s environment, the group emphasized their dedication to upholding democratic principles and ensuring that no Ghanaian is punished for demanding justice.

The Democracy Hub’s statement underscores the ongoing challenges in balancing state authority and civil liberties in Ghana’s efforts to combat environmental degradation.
