At the 2025 Africa Prosperity Dialogues in Accra, President John Dramani Mahama underscored the importance of good governance, transparency, and accountability in driving Africa’s economic success.
Addressing participants on February 2, Mahama emphasized that sustainable economic growth depends on stability, predictable policies, and adherence to the rule of law. He pointed out that these elements create a favourable environment for investment and business expansion.
Investors and businesses thrive where there is stability, predictable policies, and the rule of law, he stated.
Mahama expressed deep concern over the growing frustration among African youth due to limited economic opportunities. He noted that while the continent embraced democracy to foster development, progress has been slow, leaving many young people disillusioned.
Our youth are tired and frustrated at the lack of opportunities to realize their dreams and aspirations,” he said. “Our decision to embrace democratic governance was supposed to yield a dividend that would improve the lives of our people and bring prosperity to all. Unfortunately, progress has been sluggish and intangible.
To rebuild trust in democratic governance, Mahama urged African leaders to prioritize economic growth, attract investments, and create more job opportunities for the youth. He stressed the need to strengthen democratic institutions, uphold electoral integrity, and intensify the fight against corruption.
We must reaffirm our commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections. We must also fight corruption, which robs our nations of resources needed for development, he stated.
He further highlighted the crucial link between economic growth and security, urging leaders to promote peace across the continent.
As leaders, we must promote peace and security, as economic growth is impossible in times of conflict, he noted.
Mahama’s remarks serve as a call to action for African leaders to deepen democratic governance and accelerate economic reforms to ensure a prosperous future for all.
