Concerned Citizen urges Mahama to suspend ‘dumsor levy’ amid global tensions

24

A concerned Ghanaian resident in Tamale, Tarimbia Saani has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to consider suspending the controversial “Dumsor Levy” in response to rising global fuel prices linked to escalating tensions in the Middle East.

In a letter addressed to the Presidency at Jubilee House in Accra, the citizen, Mr. Tarimbia Saani, acknowledged his initial support for the levy, which was introduced by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government as a measure to avert a looming energy crisis.

However, he expressed concern that recent geopolitical developments, particularly the ongoing tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, are contributing to instability in global fuel markets, with direct implications for Ghana’s economy.

Mr. Saani noted that the protracted nature of the conflict, coupled with threats to key global oil supply routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, could lead to sustained increases in fuel prices and possible supply disruptions.

According to him, Ghana’s heavy reliance on imported refined petroleum products makes the country especially vulnerable to such external shocks.

He therefore urged the President to temporarily suspend the levy to cushion citizens against the rising cost of living, particularly fuel-related expenses, until global conditions stabilize.

The government can continue with the suspension until such a time things return to normalcy, the letter stated.

The appeal has been copied to Radio Tamale 91.7, where it is expected to generate further public discussion on the impact of global economic trends on local policy decisions.
