Philadelphia, USA – John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening ties with Ghanaians living abroad, describing diaspora engagement as a central pillar of national development.
Addressing members of the Ghanaian community in Philadelphia, the President underscored the critical role the diaspora plays in Ghana’s socio-economic progress.
He noted that beyond remittances, estimated at approximately US$7.8 billion annually, Ghanaians abroad contribute significantly through knowledge transfer, innovation, and international exposure.
President Mahama used the engagement to outline key economic and governance priorities of his administration.
These include efforts to stabilise the national economy, promote export-led growth, and strengthen local industries.
He highlighted the implementation of a proposed 24-hour economy policy as a strategic initiative to enhance productivity and expand employment opportunities across the country.
The President also pointed to ongoing reforms in agriculture, public service, and governance, including the development of a national anti-corruption strategy.
He further announced plans to establish a Gold Board aimed at formalising the gold trade and increasing national revenue mobilisation.
In the health sector, President Mahama detailed a series of interventions designed to improve access and affordability.
These include the rollout of a free primary healthcare programme at district hospitals and Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds, the integration of sickle cell treatment into mainstream healthcare delivery, and the deployment of 6,000 health volunteers to support community-based screenings.
He also revealed the establishment of a Ghana Medical Trust Fund to assist in the treatment of non-communicable diseases.
Touching on legislative developments, the President highlighted progress on a bipartisan bill intended to broaden the participation of Ghanaians abroad in national governance.
The proposed legislation would allow diaspora members to hold positions such as Members of Parliament and Ministers of State.
President Mahama expressed his readiness to grant presidential assent once the bill is passed, ensuring its swift implementation.
The President commended the Ghanaian diaspora for preserving and promoting the country’s cultural heritage through music, dance, and traditional performances.
He also reflected on Ghana’s historical ties with Lincoln University, noting its influence on the Pan-African vision of Kwame Nkrumah.
On the international front, President Mahama reaffirmed Ghana’s active role within regional and global institutions, including the African Union and ECOWAS.
He disclosed that preparations are underway for Ghana to assume the chairmanship of the African Union in 2027.
Concluding his address, President Mahama called on Ghanaians in the diaspora to intensify their contributions to national development through investment, skills transfer, and active engagement in initiatives that promote Ghana’s socio-economic and cultural advancement.
