The former Chief of Defence Staff, Thomas Oppong‑Peprah, has been awarded the Ordre National du Mérite in the rank of “Commandeur” by the French government.
The award was presented on Thursday, 19 March 2026, by the French Ambassador to Ghana, Diarra Dimé Labille, at a ceremony held at her residence in Cantonments, Accra.
Gen Oppong-Peprah (Rtd), who currently serves as Ghana’s Deputy Head of Mission to Canada, was honoured for his leadership and role in strengthening relations during peacekeeping missions, as well as his tenure as Chief of Defence Staff.
Presenting the award on behalf of the French President, Emmanuel Macron, the ambassador commended him for fostering cooperation between the Ghana Armed Forces and the French Armed Forces.
She noted that his leadership contributed to strengthening military collaboration and partnership between the two countries.
The ambassador further explained that the Ordre National du Mérite was established in 1963 by former French President Charles de Gaulle to recognise distinguished service and contributions to national development and international cooperation.
She indicated that the elevation of Gen Oppong-Peprah (Rtd) to the rank of Commander reflects his leadership and contribution to military diplomacy.
In his remarks, Gen Oppong-Peprah expressed appreciation to the French government for the recognition.
He dedicated the honour to both serving and retired personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces, acknowledging their professionalism and commitment.
The ceremony was attended by senior military officers, including the Director General in charge of Human Resources, Commodore Francis Ayiteyvi Nyarko, as well as the French Defence Attaché to Ghana, Colonel Grégoire Madelin, and other invited guests.
