President John Dramani Mahama has announced that his government has secured $500 million from the World Bank to rehabilitate feeder roads across the country.

Speaking on Thursday during a stakeholder engagement at the University of Energy and Natural Resources in Wenchi, Bono Region, as part of the second day of his Resetting Ghana Tour, President Mahama said the funding is aimed at tackling the poor state of rural roads that connect farming communities to major markets and transport routes.

“Government has secured 500 million dollars from the World Bank to rehabilitate feeder roads nationwide,” he told attendees.

On Sunyani’s road network, he revealed that work has already begun on the Outer Ring Road, while designs for the Inner Ring Road have been completed. “Budgetary provisions are being made for its construction,” he said, signalling that the Inner Ring Road would be the next priority.

President Mahama also confirmed plans for a new airport in Sunyani, citing limitations of the existing facility. The current airport, with a 1.5-kilometre runway, cannot be expanded due to surrounding developments.

The government, with the support of traditional authorities, has secured new land for a replacement airport with a 2.4-kilometre runway. “Groundbreaking for the new project will take place soon,” he said.

In addition, the President outlined plans to construct three regional stadia in the near term. These multipurpose facilities will serve both sports and community functions, forming part of a wider government initiative to expand infrastructure beyond major cities.

The $500 million funding and accompanying infrastructure projects underscore a renewed government focus on improving connectivity, boosting local economies, and providing modern facilities in Ghana’s regional towns.
