Finance Minister holds talks with World Bank official on jobs and economic transformation

91

The Minister for Finance, Cassiel Ato Forson, has held discussions with the Managing Director and Chief Knowledge Officer of the World Bank, Paschal Donohoe, on Ghana’s economic transformation and the next phase of the country’s development agenda.

The meeting focused on strategies to strengthen the economy and create sustainable employment opportunities, particularly for the country’s growing youth population.

Dr. Forson noted that the government had spent the past year implementing measures to reset the economy and place it on a path toward fiscal sustainability.

According to him, unemployment—especially among young people—remains one of the most pressing challenges facing the country.

He explained that with Africa’s rapidly expanding youthful population, the public sector alone cannot provide enough employment opportunities, stressing the need for policies and programmes that encourage job creation in other sectors of the economy.

Dr. Forson said the government is therefore rolling out major initiatives aimed at generating sustainable employment and expanding opportunities for young people.

Mr. Donohoe commended Ghana for what he described as a remarkable improvement in the country’s national finances and reaffirmed the World Bank’s commitment to supporting the country’s development agenda.

He indicated that the World Bank is ready to assist Ghana through initiatives such as a Jobs and Growth Analysis, which will help identify new opportunities for job creation and economic expansion.

Dr. Forson welcomed the continued partnership with the World Bank, noting that such collaboration will be crucial as the government works to create jobs, expand economic opportunities and secure a more prosperous future for Ghanaians.
