The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Ghana’s leading social security scheme, took a major step towards strengthening its foundation and expanding benefits with a high-profile stakeholder engagement in Tamale.
Organized in collaboration with the Trade Union Congress (TUC) Ghana, the event, themed: “Empowered Unions, Secure Future by Enhancing Pension Literacy Across Ghana,” drew members from across the three northern regions, marking a pivotal moment in the scheme’s journey toward greater inclusivity and sustainability.
Addressing the enthusiastic gathering, SSNIT’s Director General, Mr. Kwesi Afreh Biney, shared an optimistic outlook on the scheme’s recent financial performance.

He announced a remarkable turnaround in investment returns, with a real return of 8.03% in 2025 sharply higher than the negative 4.18% recorded in 2024. Underlining the scheme’s robust growth, Mr. Biney revealed that assets under management had surged from 2.4 billion Ghana cedis in 2024 to over 25 billion cedis in 2026
This is a testament to our strategic investments and prudent management,” Mr. Biney emphasized. “Our scheme is on a path of resilience and expansion, driven by increased active memberships and the unwavering commitment of our government.
With active contributors now numbering approximately 2.1 million an ever-growing figure SSNIT continues to expand its reach and impact.
The Director General highlighted that government contributions remained consistent, with no defaults in 2025. Notably, the government has already cleared its contribution for January 2026, demonstrating a strong commitment to the scheme’s sustainability and growth.

TUC Secretary General, Mr. Joshua Ansah, stressed the importance of increasing active contributors as a pathway to a brighter, more secure future for members. He advocated for pension payments to be made on consolidated salaries, emphasizing that such an approach would ensure higher benefits and a more dignified retirement.

Members were also encouraged to embrace the SSNIT mobile app, a digital tool designed to streamline transactions, reduce office visits, and enhance overall service delivery making it easier for contributors to manage their pensions efficiently.
The event served as a vital platform for education, dialogue, and feedback, with participants expressing confidence in SSNIT’s vision of a sustainable social security scheme that guarantees dignified retirement for all contributors.
Membership in SSNIT is not just about savings; it’s about securing a lifetime of dignity and comfort in retirement, said one attendee.
As SSNIT continues to innovate and expand, stakeholders remain optimistic about the scheme’s ability to serve the needs of Ghanaian workers now and into the future. The Tamale engagement underscores a shared commitment to building a more inclusive, efficient, and beneficial social security system for all Ghanaians.
