The Member of Parliament for Walewale, Dr. Tia Abdul-Kabiru has condemned, strongly, what he describes as an unprovoked assault by some military personnel on a journalist and several civilians in the Walewale township.
In a statement dated Tuesday, January 27, 2026, the MP alleged that soldiers travelling in an armoured vehicle and a truck from Bolgatanga towards Tamale stopped in Walewale around 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 26, and attacked the North East Regional Correspondent of Media General and other civilians without provocation.
According to the MP, the soldiers also destroyed properties belonging to residents, including motorbikes and commercial vehicles, leaving the town in fear and apprehension.
He further alleged that the journalist was detained for over four hours after the assault and that evidence of injuries recorded on the journalist’s phone was destroyed.
“In the case of the reporter for Media General, he was detained for more than four hours after being assaulted, and evidence of harm caused to his body, which he had taken with his phone, was destroyed,” the statement said.
Mr Abdul-Kabiru noted that preliminary checks with the Walewale District Police Command and the military stationed in the area indicated that the personnel involved were neither known nor officially deployed in the township.
“This is not the first time such atrocities have been visited on innocent civilians in Walewale and its environs without any cause,” he said, recalling a similar incident in February 2025 involving the same journalist and others.
Describing the alleged conduct as unacceptable, the MP warned that unchecked military brutality could lead to serious civil-military tensions.
“This culture of military brutality, which has become the order of the day, is a dangerous degenerative development when left unchecked by the Military Command,” he cautioned.
He rejected suggestions that the assault was linked to recent security concerns, insisting that residents had remained calm and law-abiding despite dissatisfaction over the handling of the Bawku conflict.
“I therefore roundly condemn this barbaric, unprofessional, and infantile show of brute force by these men in uniform on innocent civilians without any provocation whatsoever,” he said.
The Walewale MP has called on the Acting Minister of Defence to urgently investigate the incident and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
“The wholesale abuse of the people and the general application of force to all civilians is unacceptable and must be checked,” he added.
