The IGP Special Operations Team has arrested three persons for alleged drug-related offences following an intelligence-led patrol operation conducted across the Tamale Metropolis and Yendi Municipality on Thursday, January 22, 2026.
The operation, which involved a total of 105 personnel, was led by DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil and DSP Philip Perdison as part of sustained efforts to combat crime, suppress illicit drug peddling, and enhance public safety within the Northern Region.

Prior to the operation, officers received a comprehensive briefing emphasizing professionalism, discipline, operational alertness, strict adherence to human rights principles, and compliance with established rules of engagement.
The patrol was supported by ten service vehicles, including a Black Maria and an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC), to ensure effective mobility, rapid response, and operational efficiency.

The operation initially covered identified crime-prone areas within the Tamale township before moving to the Yendi Municipality, where an intensive patrol was conducted.
During the Yendi operation, two suspects, Rahman Simani and Mohammed Ibrahim, were arrested for being in possession of quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

In a related development, Kasim Abdul Fataw, a known drug peddler operating within the Tamale and Yendi areas, was also arrested.
The suspect reportedly admitted involvement in drug peddling activities but claimed to have ceased operations due to sustained police clampdowns. He was nonetheless arrested to assist police investigations.
Following the arrests, officers continued patrols within Yendi to maintain calm and ensure public safety before returning to Tamale.
The operation significantly increased police visibility and disrupted suspected criminal activities, particularly drug-related offences.
It also served as a strong deterrent to criminal elements while reinforcing public confidence in the Ghana Police Service.

Throughout the operation, the security situation in both Tamale and Yendi remained calm and stable, with residents, traders, motorists, and commuters going about their lawful activities without fear. No injuries or casualties were recorded.
All suspects have been transferred to the Sakasaka Police Station for further investigations and possible prosecution, while all exhibits retrieved have been secured for forensic and evidential purposes.
The Ghana Police Service has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety and security of lives and property across the country through sustained intelligence-led operations.
