The Tema Regional Police Command has intercepted a total of 1,613 parcels of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs in a well-coordinated intelligence-led operation along the Akosombo–Tema road.

The operation, which forms part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on drug trafficking within the region, led to the arrest of two suspects believed to be involved in the transportation of the illicit substances.

According to a press release issued by the Public Affairs Unit of the Regional Police Headquarters in Tema, the operation was triggered by intelligence received on January 10, 2026, suggesting that suspected narcotic substances were being transported from the Volta Region towards Tema.

Police surveillance was subsequently mounted along the route, with particular focus on the Agomeda Junction area, where officers intercepted two vehicles at about 12:45 a.m. on January 11, 2026.

The vehicles, a white Toyota Highlander (GS 2013-13) and a black Mitsubishi Pajero (GC 400-22) — were driven by suspects identified as Isaac Odoa, 33, and Kwame Mani, 39.

A search conducted on the vehicles led to the discovery of several compressed parcels wrapped in yellow material, suspected to be narcotic drugs.

The suspects were immediately arrested, and the vehicles escorted to the police station for further action. On January 12, 2026, the exhibits and suspects were handed over to the Regional Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Tema, where inventories and photographs were taken.

Police confirmed that 872 parcels were retrieved from the Mitsubishi Pajero, while 741 parcels were found in the Toyota Highlander, bringing the total haul to 1,613 parcels.

The suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations. Samples of the seized substances are expected to be sent to the Forensic Crime Laboratory for testing, while further searches are planned at the suspects’ places of residence. Police say arrangements are also underway to process the suspects for court.

The Tema Regional Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying operations against drug trafficking and other criminal activities in the region.

“We encourage the public to continue sharing credible information to support our security efforts and help keep our communities safe,” the statement, signed by ASP Dede Dzakpasu, Head of Public Affairs, Tema, stated.
