Ghanaian musician Belinda Ekuah Amoah, known as Mzbel, has publicly denied allegations made by media personality Doreen Avio, describing her accuser as a “chronic liar.”
The dispute stems from a recent interview Avio granted to Stacy Amoateng, in which she claimed Mzbel subjected her to verbal abuse and emotional distress.
“There’s a female celebrity who stressed me out. I had never heard anyone call me a witch until she said that to me. She cursed me and said I would suffer in life,” Doreen Avio stated in the interview.
She further alleged that Mzbel nearly cost her, her job after falsely accusing her of airing a confidential interview without consent.
“After the interview was aired, I didn’t have peace because Mzbel started creating issues for me. She said I didn’t inform her that I was recording the interview, and I asked her why I would interview her if it was not meant to be recorded,” Doreen recounted.
In a rebuttal via Facebook on 4 January 2025, Mzbel refuted these claims, asserting she was unaware she was being recorded during a private conversation.
“After everything you put me through, it is deeply painful to watch you tell lies again on live television. You called requesting an interview, and I clearly explained why I could not grant any media interview. After that, you began sharing your own difficult experiences with the police, and in that spirit, I shared mine, unaware that I was being secretly recorded,” Mzbel stated.
The artist also explicitly denied a serious claim attributed to her by Avio regarding the Ghana Police Service.
“Let me be clear: I never said the police sexually molested me. That claim is false. The accusations were about assault and bribery. The media house later invited my manager and me and apologised in the presence of many witnesses, including Doreen Avio and Daddy Bosco, after the truth came out and my manager threatened legal action,” she clarified.
Mzbel accused Avio of reviving old, damaging rumours to tarnish her reputation.
“Because of an old lie told about me years ago, allegations of sexual misconduct are repeatedly attached to my name whenever people like Doreen want to discredit me and play the victim. It is cruel and dishonest,” Mzbel added.
The “16 Years” singer confirmed that the media outlet in question subsequently offered an unqualified apology for the aired interview.
