Tamale, Dec. 26, 2025 – The IGP Special Operations Team has intensified security patrols across the Tamale Metropolis as part of measures to curb violent and organised crimes and ensure a safe environment for residents and businesses during the festive season.
The operation, conducted on December 24, 2025, targeted robberies, sexual offences, attacks on mobile money vendors and commercial establishments, drug peddling and abuse, as well as other violent crimes.
A total of 105 personnel were deployed under the leadership of Chief Inspector Abdullai Tahiru, who coordinated and supervised all tactical movements and patrol activities.

The exercise began with intensified highway and community patrols, focusing on identified crime hotspots and other areas prone to criminal activity within the metropolis.
During the patrols, the team responded to a distress call from Kpalsi concerning a man identified as Hashim, allegedly found in possession of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp. Upon arrival, officers discovered that the suspect had fled the scene.
The suspected substance, however, had already been secured by the local task force.

While a search was being conducted at the location, a young man, Mohammed Alhassan, visited the residence of the suspect and was promptly arrested.
Police investigations revealed that he is an associate of the suspect at large.
During interrogation, Alhassan admitted ownership of the suspected substance, stating that he had handed it over to Hashim to sell on his behalf, with proceeds to be returned to him. He was subsequently taken into police custody as operations continued.

The team later extended patrols to several communities, including Vitting, Wamali, and Nanton Zuo along the Yendi Road, as well as Sanzhirigu and the Tamale-Salaga highway stretch.
Security patrols were also carried out at the University for Development Studies campus and surrounding student hostels to enhance police visibility and deter crime.
Further patrols covered the Tamale-Kumasi Road, the Datooyili enclave near the New Police Hospital, and the central business district.
Officers also conducted patrols within the Tamale Central Market and the Taxi Rank to ensure the safety of traders, commuters, and the general public.
No additional arrests were made during the operation, and the overall security situation in the metropolis remained calm and stable.
Traders and commuters were observed carrying out their activities without fear or panic, and no casualties were recorded.
The arrested suspect, Mohammed Alhassan, has been detained at the Sakasaka Police Station to assist with ongoing investigations and possible prosecution.
The seized exhibits have been handed over to investigators for screening and forensic examination, while efforts continue to apprehend the second suspect, Hashim, who remains at large.
Police authorities say the successful operation significantly contributed to the maintenance of law and order in Tamale during the festive season.
The strong security presence and professionalism of the IGP Special Operations Team, they noted, boosted public confidence and effectively deterred criminal activity.
The Ghana Police Service has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property and ensuring a peaceful environment for social and economic activities throughout the Christmas and New Year period.
