Accra, Ghana – His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has appointed Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko as the Acting Director General of the National Communications Authority (NCA).

This appointment, announced on January 23, 2025, marks a historic moment for the Authority as it is the first time a Director General has been appointed from within the organization.

Rev. Ing. Fianko, an accomplished electronic communications engineer, brings over 20 years of expertise in radio frequency spectrum management, telecommunications and broadcasting regulation, policy formulation, ICT industry research, and public speaking.

In 2022, he was elected to the prestigious Radio Regulations Board (RRB) of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), representing the global radiocommunications community for a four-year term (2023–2026).

Rev. Ing. Fianko began his journey with the NCA as a National Service Person in 2004 and steadily rose through the ranks to become the Director of the Engineering Division in January 2024.

In this capacity, he led teams responsible for planning, managing, licensing, and monitoring radio frequency spectrum for telecommunications and broadcasting services in Ghana. He also chaired the Significant Market Power (SMP) Operations Team.

His contributions to Ghana’s communications sector include spearheading the country’s transition from analogue to digital broadcasting and serving as Secretary to the Digital Broadcasting Migration Committee (DBMC) from 2010 to 2016.

He played a critical role in developing Ghana’s DTT receiver specifications, later adopted as standards by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Internationally, Rev. Ing. Fianko has represented Ghana in organizations such as the African Telecommunication Union (ATU), Regional African Satellite Communication Organization (RASCOM), and ECOWAS Commission.

He has also provided advisory services to countries such as Benin and The Gambia.

A distinguished academic, Rev. Ing. Fianko holds a degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), a Master’s in Communications Management from Buckinghamshire New University, and an MPhil in Applied Business Leadership and Management from Universidad Católica de Murcia, Spain.

He is a member of the Ghana Institution of Engineers (GhIE) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Beyond his technical expertise, Rev. Ing. Fianko is a Minister of the Methodist Church Ghana, a published author, and the founding leader of the evangelistic outreach ministry, Nkwa.Life.

He succeeds Dr. Joe Anokye and is expected to leverage his vast experience in technology regulation, leadership, and innovation to drive Ghana’s communications sector into a new era of growth and technological advancement.
